Plan bathroom cleaning as separate operations for the basin, the shower, the toilet and the floor. Applying a single product to the whole room may not be appropriate, especially on marble and lacquered surfaces. Identify the materials first; then work through visible dirt, limescale build-up and any damp problem as separate matters.
Start by getting to know the surfaces
A surface that looks like ceramic may be natural stone; a shiny tap may have a special finish. Check which cleaner is compatible with the surface in the manufacturer's care instructions. When using a new cleaner on a suitable surface for the first time, test it on a small hidden section. You cannot make a use the label explicitly excludes acceptable by doing a small test.
| Part | Approach | Point to check |
|---|---|---|
| Suitable ceramic basin and shower surfaces | Wiping or rinsing with a bathroom cleaner suited to the surface | Read the product and surface instructions together |
| Marble or lacquered surface | A care method specific to the material | Do not use Herbaclean Bathroom & Toilet Cleaner |
| Taps and coated accessories | The fittings manufacturer's method | Do not leave the product on longer than necessary |
| Inside the toilet bowl | The separate application instructions of the single chosen product | Follow the dwell time, then flush |
| Toilet seat | A wiping method suited to the seat's material | Do not automatically carry the bowl product over to the seat |
The order of application for the basin and shower
- Clear the area. Move towels, personal care items and open containers out of the way. Collect hair and loose dirt at the start of the cleaning.
- Apply the right product. Herbaclean Bathroom & Toilet Cleaner is used on suitable basin, bath, shower enclosure, tile and ceramic surfaces. Do not include marble and lacquered areas in this application.
- Wipe or rinse the surface. After applying the product to the surface, continue with the relevant instructions for use. Do not apply the long dwell time given for inside the toilet bowl to shower glass or a tap.
- Finish the job. Once the required rinsing is done, remove the remaining water; do not leave product or water pooling, particularly at edges and joints.
If the dirt in one section will not come off, do not switch straight to a harsher sponge. The mark may be wear or permanent discolouration in the surface. If a finish has been damaged, a cleaning product will not repair it. Rather than scrubbing the same spot repeatedly, get care information from the material's manufacturer.
Liquid and powder products have different steps inside the toilet
Liquid Bathroom & Toilet Cleaner is applied evenly to the inner rim of the bowl, left for 30 minutes, and then flushed away. A brush can be used if needed. That timing belongs to the application inside the bowl. Close the bottle after use and put it back in storage; do not leave the bathroom open to children during the dwell time.
For Herbaclean Toilet Cleaner Powder, one 100 g sachet is poured into the bowl; once foam has formed, wait 2–3 minutes and brush if needed. Then flush. The product is not put in the cistern and is not used to clear blockages. Do not combine the liquid and powder products in one application; do not merge two different sets of instructions into a single operation.
Keep a separate cloth for the toilet seat
Clean the top and underside of the seat and the area around the fixings by a method suited to the material. Do not use the cloth you use for the toilet on the basin or in the kitchen. Herbaclean Toilet Seat Hygiene Spray is applied to a suitable surface and wiped dry with paper or a cloth. It is a surface product and is not used to clean hands or skin.
Do not draw a conclusion about disinfection from the word "hygiene" in a product name alone. Cleaning and disinfection are different operations. If there is a specific need for disinfection, the intended uses and instructions of a product authorised for that purpose must be assessed separately.
Track damp problems separately from cleaning
Use the ventilation after showering, remove standing water and keep an eye on corners that stay permanently wet. Where there is recurring damp, a leak under the basin or water constantly pooling around a tap, the source needs to be dealt with. Cleaning does not fix a faulty ventilation system or a plumbing leak.
Do not assume that a bathroom cleaner will resolve an area where mould has appeared. Assess the extent of the problem and the surface material; for widespread or recurring growth, seek appropriate expert support. Damp appearing behind walls and cabinets in particular is a different maintenance job from wiping dirt off a surface.
A short check when the cleaning is done
Check that no product residue, wet floor or open packaging is left behind. Set used cloths aside for washing and drying; put the brush back in its place. Keep cleaning products in their labelled packaging, out of children's reach. Provide ventilation while you work and use the protective equipment the label calls for.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use bathroom cleaner on a marble basin?
Herbaclean Bathroom & Toilet Cleaner is not suitable for marble and lacquered surfaces. Choose the method recommended by the basin's manufacturer.
Should I leave it 30 minutes on every surface?
No. That time belongs to the liquid product's application inside the toilet bowl. Follow the separate methods for the shower, basin and coated parts.
Can I add another cleaner to the powder product to make it foam more?
No. Use the product on its own according to its instructions. Do not mix products in order to increase the amount of foam.
Why does damp keep coming back in the corner I cleaned?
A leak, inadequate ventilation or condensation may be continuing. Rather than wiping the same area again and again, have the source of the moisture checked.
